Avoiding downtime: modern alternatives to outdated certificate pinning practices:

This article discusses how certificate pinning, a practice used to prevent mis-issued certificates from intercepting traffic, is becoming outdated due to changes in the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) world and new solutions being developed. Certificate pinning relies on the exact matching of certificates, which can cause problems when certificates are frequently rotated. The article recommends alternative methods such as using shorter certificate lifetimes, rotating intermediate certificates, increasing use of certificate transparency, and adopting modern standards like ACME protocol, to achieve the same level of security without the management overhead or risk associated with pinning.

Privat Krankenversicherte sollen im Schnitt 18 Prozent mehr zahlen:

Private health insurers have announced significant premium increases for the coming year, with average rates set to rise by almost one fifth. Public health insurers have also warned of higher contributions. Privately insured patients are expected to face substantially higher fees in 2023, with the majority of private health insurance companies planning a premium increase from January 1st, on average by around 18%. Around two-thirds of the 8.7 million fully insured will be affected and many more may face even greater increases. The Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that price hikes over 30% are not uncommon. However, the Association of Private Health Insurers says it does not confirm such increases as a whole. The nature of premium calculations means there is always fluctuation around an average figure. Private health insurance companies review their rates at different points in the calendar year and adjust them accordingly. Many providers are raising their prices from January 1st, with some like DKV doing so on April 1st. Customers will receive letters detailing their new charges over the next few weeks. The main causes of the premium increase are strong increases in medical services. The largest cost driver is hospital treatments, where private health insurance costs rose by 13.5% alone in 2023 and this increase is set to continue in 2024. One reason for this is that some operations were carried out less frequently during the Covid pandemic and have been caught up with since then. The rising prices are also felt in nursing care and general hospital services, which are identical for privately insured individuals. Between 2021 and 2023, the costs per average day of hospitalization increased by 37.5%. For example, the cost of caring for a newborn has on average increased by 18%. This is partly due to higher minimum wages and stricter legal requirements for nursing staff. Experts advise patients to switch within their insurance provider because often new offers are more affordable. A change in providers does not usually pay off, especially because of built-up reserves. Consumer centers also see switching as the best solution. Policyholders can request quotes for changing tariffs free of charge with a sample letter. Public health insurers have also warned of higher contributions due to growing expenses in June. For 2025, they expect an additional financial burden of 0.5 to 0.6 percentage points. This does not include further costs from ongoing legislative projects. The additional contribution that public health insurance companies charge their members has already been increased by an average of 1.7% for 2024. The overall contribution includes a general rate of 14.6% of gross income in addition to this.

America's Young Men Are Falling Even Further Behind:

This article discusses the challenges faced by boys and men in today's society, particularly regarding education, career opportunities, and social norms. Solving climate change by abusing thermodynamic scaling laws:

This article presents a research proposal that focuses on the idea of raising crops for biomass and freezing them in huge aboveground piles during winter by running pipes through the middle. The proposal suggests that with some insulation, the thawing process can be slowed down significantly during summer. The removal of large quantities of carbon from Earth's atmosphere is a promising way to mitigate global warming or climate change. Proposed methods include direct air capture and biomass-centric carbon sequestration approaches like burial in deep, anoxic water, compression into polymer-lined bricks, carbon mineralization, and storing salted biomass in a moisture-controlled environment. The author of the proposal argues that their method, which involves freezing waterlogged piles of vegetation during winter and relying on the system's large thermal mass to keep the biomass biologically inactive during summer, could be a viable solution for carbon sequestration.

Bundesrat billigt Vorschlag zur Speicherung von IP-Adressen:

The Bundesrat has proposed a new, legally secure form of data retention for law enforcement to provide additional tools in particularly difficult cases. An initiative from Hesse for unrestricted and random storage of IP addresses in the fight against severe crime, such as child abuse, gained majority support today. Now the Bundestag must deal with this proposal. If telecommunications providers are not compelled to store data, the success of investigations depends on chance, said Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein before the vote in the state chamber. The European Court of Justice set strict limits on the storage of telecommunications data for criminal investigations in Germany in a September 2022 ruling, stating that the currently suspended regulation on data retention in Germany is incompatible with EU law. They ruled, however, that there could be limited data retention of IP addresses for combating serious crime under certain conditions. Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) so far supports the „Quick Freeze“ procedure, where data are only stored when a suspicion of a serious offense exists. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) is in favor of legally secure storage of IP addresses, but she also linked the issue to her approval of the extension of the rent price brake, which is important for Greens and SPD. „This law is a real breakthrough for new investigation quality,“ said Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) to Deutsche Presse-Agentur. The states could close one of the crucial security gaps in the currently negotiated security package with this legislative initiative, he added. In another news: Telegram - Messenger wants to provide more data to justice.

CA law means stores can't say you're buying a game if you're merely licensing it:

The article discusses the new law in California that bans game companies from using the word „buy“ when selling digital goods, such as games, books, and movies. This is due to cases where users thought they were purchasing a product but were actually just licensing it, which could be revoked at any time by the company. The law aims to protect consumers' rights and clarify the difference between buying and licensing.

The article also touches on similar issues in other industries, such as the music industry, where the concept of „buying“ a song has been redefined over the years due to digital distribution. It raises questions about how we should handle ephemeral goods like software, which can be updated and changed after purchase. Some people argue that the current system is not working and that we need to find a better way to balance the rights of consumers with those of IP owners.

Finally, the article suggests that licensing could be made more affordable than physical sales since ownership cannot be transferred. However, others argue that if you buy a game or any other digital product, it should work properly from the start and that companies should be responsible for fixing any defects.

Archive | The Architecture of London Pubs by Stephen Gardiner - The London Magazine:

New standards for a faster and more private Internet:

This article discusses several performance enhancements made by Cloudflare, a content delivery network (CDN) and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection service provider. The main topics include the introduction of Zstandard compression, Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) for privacy, HTTP/3 prioritization, and QUIC congestion control.

Zstandard is an advanced compression algorithm that offers higher compression ratios comparable to GZIP but with significantly faster compression and decompression speeds than Brotli. It was developed by Yann Collet at Facebook and open-sourced in 2016. Cloudflare's implementation of Zstandard resulted in a 42% speed improvement over Brotli while maintaining almost the same compression levels.

Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) is a technology that encrypts the Server Name Indication (SNI) during the TLS handshake, enhancing user privacy by concealing the actual destination website from intermediaries observing traffic. ECH leverages the Hybrid Public Key Encryption (HPKE) standard and works with other IETF standards like the new HTTPS DNS resource record.

HTTP/3 Prioritization focuses on efficiently managing the order in which web assets are loaded, improving web performance by ensuring critical assets are delivered faster. It uses Extensible Priorities to prioritize resources based on their urgency and progressive processability.

QUIC congestion control aims to optimize data flow, preventing network bottlenecks, and ensuring smooth, reliable transmission even under heavy traffic conditions. By implementing BBR v3, an advanced congestion control algorithm developed by Google, Cloudflare aims to further enhance the efficiency of its network.

The article emphasizes the importance of real-time performance measurement through tools like RUM (Real User Metrics) and Server-Timing headers for data-driven decision making in optimizing user experience. These enhancements are set to be made available across all Cloudflare plan types, ensuring that customers can benefit from improved speed, privacy, and reliability.

Millions of Vehicles Could Be Hacked and Tracked Thanks to a Simple Website Bug:

Security researchers have demonstrated a technique to hack and track millions of vehicles, which is considerably easier than previous methods. They found a flaw in Kia's web portal that allowed them to reassign control of the internet-connected features of most modern Kia vehicles. By exploiting this vulnerability, they were able to scan virtually any internet-connected Kia vehicle's license plate and gain the ability to track its location, unlock the car, honk its horn, or start its ignition at will. The researchers alerted Kia to the problem in June, and it appears that the company has fixed the vulnerability; however, this highlights the poor web security for vehicles in the industry.

Pilots Are Dying of Tiredness. Tech Can’t Save Them:

India's aviation industry, which is projected to cater to over 300 million domestic passengers by 2030, faces a looming crisis due to increasing concerns around pilot fatigue. Recent incidents involving two Indian pilots who died on duty within three months raised alarms in the industry. In response, India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) introduced new rules on pilot duty and rest periods; however, these were not implemented as planned. The DGCA has faced pressure from airline companies that claim the proposed regulations would require a 20% increase in pilot numbers, leading to increased expenses and potential flight cancellations. Despite this setback, some airlines, such as IndiGo and Air India, have introduced safety management software and tools aimed at preventing fatigue-inducing rosters and pairings.

Legalizing Sports Gambling Was a Huge Mistake:

The American Gaming Association expects $35 billion in bets to be placed on NFL games by 2024, a significant increase from last year's total. Sports gambling is now legal in 38 states and the District of Columbia, yielding $10 billion a year in revenue. However, researchers have found that this growth has led to increased financial and familial misery, particularly for economically precarious households. Legalizing sports gambling was deemed as a mistake due to its negative impact on household savings, bank account overdrafts, credit card debt, and the risk of household bankruptcy. Furthermore, studies have shown that legalized sports betting contributes to increased domestic violence rates. The industry's profits largely come from those suffering from gambling addiction, with tax revenue being less than expected. Some states are considering prohibiting sports gambling once again in order to reduce its negative impact on society and households.

How to avoid a BSOD on your 2 billion dollar spacecraft:

The article describes a scenario wherein spacecraft underwent Closed Loop Tests (CLTs) using placeholder memory addresses meant for a previously developed spacecraft, leading to an unexplainable error. Turning the spacecraft off and on wasn't as simple as just flipping a switch or unplugging it, due to various steps needed to ensure no hardware got damaged in the process. An error occurred during the teardown script, where some of the motors didn't turn off. Further inspection revealed errors on the connection between the onboard computer and the Enhanced Remote Interface Units (ERIUs). The ERIUs are how the spacecraft communicates with different sensors and systems reading actual orbit and mission data. Due to this error, active telemetry wasn't received from the vehicle. Finally, rebooting the ERIU was achieved by rebooting the whole onboard computer.

Masking:

Audio masking is a technique used to hide the intelligence of intercepted audio by covert listening devices or bugs. Some of the masking schemes include subcarrier (SC), double sideband with suppressed carrier (DSBSC), triple pulse (TP), rejected pulse (RP), and dirty pulse (DP). These techniques make it difficult for non-compatible surveillance receivers to intercept and demodulate the audio signal, protecting covert listening devices from being detected.

Telekom tritt Buglas bei und erntet Kritik:

Deutsche Telekom has joined the German Fiber Optic Installation Association (Buglas). The move has been criticized by Buglas's competitor Breko, claiming that Buglas is selling its soul. Under the motto „Gemeinsam stark für Glasfaser“, Deutsche Telekom has joined the German Fiber Optic Installation Association (Buglas), which previously had mainly Telekom competitors such as Deutsche GigaNetz, GVG Glasfaser, Tele Columbus, UGG, Wilhelm.tel, Willy.tel and many municipal utilities. This is the first time that Deutsche Telekom has joined a telecommunications association. Both sides agree on the long-term investment horizon for fiber optic expansion, with Telekom's German business manager, Srini Gopalan, explaining the decision to join Buglas. The goal is to intensify cooperation and expand more partnerships in FTTH „for a sustainable digitalization.“

Gopalan emphasized that Deutsche Telekom relies on open networks based on Open Access, offering high provider diversity to all customers. In areas jointly developed by Buglas companies, competition takes place according to this principle on the respective lines. This means that „network partners“ like O2, Vodafone, 1&1 or regional providers can use these lines without discrimination. However, many Telekom competitors criticize an increasing double build-up by Deutsche Telekom. Buglas President Theo Weirich assured that cooperation with regional suppliers has been a significant part of Telekom's expansion strategy for years and that both parties benefit when the intensified collaboration takes place „on equal terms.“

Breitband-Allianz: Buglas gives up its identity Patrick Helmes, Vice President of the around 170-member Buglas and Managing Director of Glasfaser Ruhr, called this a „major signal for the entire industry.“ It is about connecting Germany as quickly as possible with the latest FTTH technology. The subsidiary of Bochum's municipal utilities has been working in cooperation on expansion with Deutsche Telekom since two years ago, benefiting many residents in the Ruhr region. However, Buglas will also have to accept a loss: Operators M-net from Munich and Netcologne announced in February that they would leave the association at the end of the year, after having previously served on its board. They then turned to the Cable and Digital Association Anga after unsuccessfully trying to promote a merger between the two industry associations.

The Federal Association for Broadband Communication (Breko), which has often fought side by side with Buglas for the common cause, is severely disappointed by the announcement: „With the admission of the former monopolist, Buglas abandons its identity as a representative of the interests of competitors in fiber optic expansion and turns into Deutsche Telekom's association,“ fears Breko Managing Director Stephan Albers. In this way, he loses the opportunity to „influence the telecommunications market in favor of the competition“ - for example, regarding the disconnection of copper-based DSL networks, double expansion by Telekom or reintroducing a service provider obligation. A number of the over 500 members of Breko also cooperate with Deutsche Telekom. However, they could rely on a strong association that stands up for fair open access and genuine competition.

Caroline Ellison, former partner and co-conspirator of Sam Bankman-Fried, will receive a sentence of two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The judge at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York decided on this lenient sentence, despite the potential 110-year imprisonment and monitoring period that could have been imposed. Ellison was accused of leading cryptocurrency hedge fund Alameda Research and illegally using customers' funds from FTX exchange for its speculations. The damage amounted to $8 billion. Both FTX and Alameda Research were founded by Sam Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang, with SBF overseeing Ellison as CEO of Alameda Research. Together with other managers, they misused customer deposits for betting on cryptocurrencies, large political donations, real estate purchases, and other expenses. Despite billions in circulation, there was no accounting that deserved the name. In November 2022, both FTX and Alameda Research filed for bankruptcy. At the end, Alameda Research owed FTX $10 billion.

Ellison pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud and conspiracy and cooperated with prosecutors. In return, she has returned most of her assets and helped locate over 130 FTX- and Alameda-related companies in the jungle. In exchange, the prosecution agreed not to pursue further charges. SBF, on the other hand, received no similar offer. He described himself as innocent but was convicted of all seven allowed charges and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Statistically speaking, each year in US imprisonment reduces life expectancy by twice as much time. Bankman-Fried is challenging the sentence from behind bars and aims to secure a new jury trial.

Another FTX manager who pleaded guilty, Ryan Salame, was sentenced in May to seven and a half years in prison, three years of supervised release, $6 million in asset forfeiture, and $5 million in restitution. Salame did not testify during the trial, Ellison did. Their lawyers requested leniency based on their cooperation. The probation office also recommended it. The prosecution did not request a specific sentence but emphasized the exceptional cooperation of the defendants. Judge Lewis Kaplan praised Ellison's support and noted that she had been exploited by her former boyfriend. Due to the seriousness of her fraud, he could not let her off without punishment.

Gary Wang also reached a deal with the prosecution and pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud and conspiracy; theoretically, he faces up to 50 years in prison. FTX manager Nishad Singh also testified against the company, pleading guilty six times, potentially facing up to 75 years in prison. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York will determine the sentences for Wang and Singh later this fall. Ellison is scheduled to begin her sentence on November 7th at a facility in Boston.

The case is called USA v Caroline Ellison and is being heard at the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York under case number 22-cr-673.

fedi is for losers — wingolog:

The fediverse has a unique vibe due to its do-it-yourself ethos and a shared experience of leaving or avoiding Twitter. Hacker plants false memories in ChatGPT to steal user data in perpetuity:

Security researcher Johann Rehberger discovered a vulnerability in ChatGPT that allowed attackers to store false information and malicious instructions in a user's long-term memory settings. OpenAI initially dismissed the flaw as a safety issue, but after creating a proof-of-concept exploit that exfiltrated all user input, they issued a partial fix earlier this month. The vulnerability was abused by using long-term conversation memory, a feature introduced in February and made widely available in September. Rehberger privately reported the finding to OpenAI in May, but they closed the report ticket. He later submitted another disclosure statement with a proof-of-concept that caused ChatGPT's app for macOS to send all user input and output to an attacker's website. While OpenAI has introduced a fix preventing memory abuse as an exfiltration vector, untrusted content can still perform prompt injections that cause the memory tool to store information planted by malicious attackers.

Firefox tracks you with “privacy preserving” feature:

A recent Firefox update from Mozilla enabled a „Privacy Preserving Attribution“ (PPA) feature that secretly turned the browser into a tracking tool for websites, mimicking Google's (failed) Privacy Sandbox. While Mozilla claims it improves user privacy by allowing ad performance measurement without individual websites collecting personal data, critics argue that this form of tracking is still invasive and in violation of the EU's GDPR. Mozilla has turned on its „privacy preserving attribution“ feature by default, without informing users or seeking their consent. The Austrian data protection authority has been asked to investigate Mozilla's behavior, and Mozilla should switch to an opt-in system, properly inform users about its data processing activities, and delete unlawfully processed data.

When Earth "Ate" A Planet (Video):

The transcript of the YouTube video discusses the origins of the Moon and its unique characteristics. Scientists analyzed lunar samples and found that they were similar to Earth's rocks, hinting at the Moon's formation from part of Earth itself. The Moon's size, isotopic similarities with Earth, small iron core, lack of volatiles, and once-deep magma ocean can be explained by the canonical impact theory, in which a giant collision between the early Earth and protoplanet the size of Mars formed the Moon. However, further research has led to an isotopic crisis, as lunar rocks contain more material from Earth than predicted. A new impact model published in 2022 may solve the isotopic crisis by explaining how the outer part of the moon could be made of up to 60% material from the Earth. Additionally, scientists propose that Theia's mantle and some of its iron core were swallowed up by the Earth, accounting for anomalies in Earth's mantle. Researchers are still searching for solid evidence of Theia hidden either under the lunar surface or beneath our feet.

Die Habsburger - Kampf um die Macht | Doku HD Reupload | ARTE (Video):

The Transcript eines Youtube Videos details the events leading up to and including the Battle of the Marchfeld in 1278 between King Rudolf von Habsburg of Germany and King Otto Kapchemissel of Bohemia. The summary is divided into several topics, each with key points and arguments, important facts and names, remarkable quotes, anecdotes, and technical terms.

Introduction: The video begins by setting the stage for the battle in 1278, when two powerful kings were vying for control of central Europe. The introduction also mentions that this battle is one of the largest and bloodiest of the Middle Ages, but has remained largely unexplored until now.

Background: The video provides a brief overview of the political landscape in Europe at the time, with the Holy Roman Empire acting as a bridge between eastern and western Europe. The first half of the 13th century was marked by instability following the death of Emperor Frederick II, leading to a period often referred to as the „time of trouble“ due to the competition for power among various rulers.

Otto Kapchemissel: The video then focuses on King Otto Kapchemissel, who had grand ambitions to become the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire but needed to be chosen as the German king first. His absence at the 1273 election in Frankfurt was a fatal error that led to his rival, Rudolf Graf von Habsburg, being chosen instead.

Rudolf Graf von Habsburg: The video describes Rudolf Graf von Habsburg as an intelligent and strategic ruler who quickly expanded his family's influence from Switzerland across Europe. He was also known for his humility and willingness to get his hands dirty, a stark contrast to the opulent image of other rulers at the time. However, he was also ruthless and willing to do whatever it took to gain power.

The Conflict Escalates: Rudolf challenged Otto Kapchemissel's territories, leading to a series of events that culminated in an official call for war. In response, Otto Kapchemissel sought alliances with other powers, including the Poles and his wife's family in Russia. He also sent letters warning of the threat posed by the Germans, highlighting ethnic tensions between Slavic peoples and German-speaking populations that would continue to play a role in European history.

The Battle of the Marchfeld: The video provides an overview of the tactics used during medieval battles, with knights being the primary focus due to their effectiveness on the battlefield. The Battle of the Marchfeld was one of the largest such battles ever fought, involving around 40,000 men. Rudolf's secret use of archers from the Kumani people turned the tide of the battle in his favor, leading to a decisive victory for him and the Habsburgs.

Aftermath: The video discusses the fate of King Otto Kapchemissel, whose body was mutilated after his death in the battle. The Battle of the Marchfeld marked the beginning of the rise of the Habsburg dynasty, which would go on to become one of the most powerful families in Europe. It also led to a shift in power dynamics within the Holy Roman Empire and set the stage for future conflicts between various European powers.

Conclusion: The video concludes with an executive summary highlighting key points from the history leading up to and including the Battle of the Marchfeld, as well as its lasting impact on European politics and society. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding these events in order to better understand contemporary issues related to ethnicity and power struggles within Europe.

We Finally Know What Causes Bad Trips (Video):

The video discusses the research on psychedelic drugs and their potential therapeutic benefits. It highlights that bad trips are common and can lead to serious distress or even death, prompting scientists to investigate what causes them. Bad trip experiences can include increased heart rate, panic, mood changes, and ego dissolution. Some users may continue to be negatively affected by psychedelics long after the drugs have worn off. The big question is why bad trips happen to some people but not others, with neurotransmitters playing a significant role. Glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, has been found to be correlated with bad trips and increased anxiety levels during psychedelic experiences. Non-brain chemistry factors such as high dosages or set and setting can also contribute to a person's likelihood of having a bad trip. Despite their risks, psychedelics have shown potential for therapeutic purposes in treating disorders like depression, anxiety, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Homemade Machine Turns Bioplastics Into Cooling Fabric (Video):

The video showcases the creation of self-cooling fabric using only hardware store parts in a backyard workshop. Ben, the presenter, has previously developed radiative sky cooling coatings that can keep surfaces several degrees below air temperature even under direct sunlight. He turns his attention to creating fabric with similar cooling effects by melting and spinning plastic fibers.

In one experiment, he uses a cotton candy machine to make PLA fibers but finds it doesn't work for this purpose. Later, he develops a new method using an inline ventilation fan, ethyl acetate as a solvent, and polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a long-chain polymer. The fabric created in the video shows radiative sky cooling properties but has room for improvement.

The main takeaway from this video is that Ben successfully creates self-cooling fabric using simple equipment and readily available materials, demonstrating potential applications such as air cooling or thermal camouflage.

Why do gay people look like that? (Video):

The transcript discusses the concept of „gayface,“ which refers to whether someone's facial features can indicate their sexual orientation. Early research found that self-identified homosexual men had more symmetrical faces than straight men, but this was based on small studies and didn't consider grooming techniques. In 2015, researchers used morphometric software to analyze physical features and found that gay men had shorter noses and larger foreheads compared to their straight counterparts. Research on lesbian faces showed that they tended to have more upturned noses and smaller foreheads than straight women.

Studies also revealed that some people are better at identifying gay faces than others, with women being particularly good at guessing a man's sexuality based solely on his face. A 2021 study using AI processing systems found that it could accurately guess a person's sexual orientation from their facial shape with 81% accuracy for men and 74% for women, indicating there are differences in facial structures between gay and straight individuals. However, the exact reason behind these differences is unclear, and the research raises concerns about reinforcing harmful stereotypes and potential misuse of this technology.
